ANA MENDIETA
International Women's Day protest
8 March 2024 - Tate Modern London
Duration 90min
Material: Feathers & Banner Inspired by Mendieta's performance "Blood + Feathers" 1974 On International Women's Day, I performed a public protest outside Tate Modern to honour Ana Mendieta, raising awareness about the systemic injustices in both the legal and art worlds. Mendieta, a pioneering feminist artist, was murdered by her husband, Carl Andre, who was acquitted of all charges. Despite this, Andre's work continues to be displayed in major institutions like Tate Modern, a stark reminder of the art world's complicity in silencing voices like Mendieta’s. Inspired by Mendieta's 1974 performance Blood + Feathers, I stood outside Tate Modern, my body covered in feathers, carrying a flag emblazoned with her name. I walked around the building before lying on the freezing ground for 90 minutes, pushing the limits of my physical endurance to draw attention to this injustice. This performance was a visceral act of protest and a call for accountability, confronting bystanders with the art world's failure to honor Mendieta's legacy and its broader disregard for marginalized voices. |
