Duration 25min

Performance for SLIVER London, May 2024
DeConstruct The System is a performance art piece inspired by my journey immigrating to the U.K. The piece resembles the voices of many minorities who face the systemic oppression and identity crisis as a result of their immigration; in my personal experience the difficulties of immigration as a queer female artists from Iran to the UK. DeConstruct The System tend to create a new meaning out of an existing form, in this piece the piano is the centre object and is never played in its traditional form. The performer never touches the keys, but the piano will sound from various extended techniques such as: use of fishing wire, chain and glass on the strings, percussion on the piano frame with contact mic and etc. The existing structure has been given a new voice and a new meaning.
The performer improvises with body percussion, voice & prepared amplified piano by using the audience as graphic score. The performer locks eye contact with a member of the audience and improvises over their expressions and movements. The use of the transparent plastic sheet and plasma tv create an illusion of constant reflection for the audience. At the end, the performer frees themself from the reflective sheet and starts dancing hysterically - inspired by acts of choreomania, Their movements resemble dance moves from queer/club culture, and dancing in a circle evokes Iranian/Middle Eastern party culture.
